چکیده

The zero-range potential model is used to investigate positron collisions and annihilation with molecules. The Kr2 dimer is considered as an example. It is shown that (i) although positrons do not bind to individual Kr atoms, they do form bound states with Kr2. (ii) A sequence of vibrationally excited states of the positron–molecule complex extends into the positron continuum, where it manifests as vibrational Feshbach resonances. (iii) These resonances give a very large contribution to the positron annihilation rate. Even after averaging over the thermal positron energy distribution, the contribution of the lowest Feshbach resonance exceeds that of the non-resonant background by an order of magnitude. 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Positron-molecule interactions: Resonant attachment, annihilation, and bound states

This article presents an overview of current understanding of the interaction of low-energy positrons with molecules with emphasis on resonances, positron attachment, and annihilation. Measurements of annihilation rates resolved as a function of positron energy reveal the presence of vibrational Feshbach resonances VFRs for many polyatomic molecules. These resonances lead to strong enhancement ...

Dipole enhancement of positron binding to molecules.

Measurements of positron-molecule binding energies are made for molecules with large permanent dipole moments (>2.7  D), by studying vibrational-Feshbach-mediated annihilation resonances as a function of incident positron energy. The binding energies are relatively large (e.g., ≥90  meV) as compared to those for similar sized molecules studied previously and analogous weakly bound electron-mole...

Role of vibrational dynamics in resonant positron annihilation on molecules.

Vibrational Feshbach resonances are dominant features of positron annihilation for incident positron energies in the range of the molecular vibrations. Studies in relatively small molecules are described that elucidate the role of intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution into near-resonant multimode states, and the subsequent coupling of these modes to the positron continuum, in suppres...

Feshbach-resonance-mediated annihilation in positron interactions with large molecules

Measurements of positron-on-molecule annihilation have established that positrons attach to a variety of molecules via vibrational Feshbach resonances VFRs . These resonances, in turn, result in greatly enhanced positron annihilation rates beyond those expected in simple collisions. A recent paper J. A. Young and C. M. Surko, Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 133201 2007 described experimental studies and a...
